Peter Brennan

Didymoi

Didymoi (2008) engages with the dynamic suggested by the sign of the Twins. In this sequence, Brennan evokes a distinctive, stilling tone that marshals the reflecting elements of an unpredictable yet coherent spectacle.

Nocturne

The light
would bring their beauty
so that I

could push aside - at one or so -
the glass, the bookish reverie
and motion in the ever patient night. Accept

that passing over, assured their bright
delight would answer me, puffy angelic
dawnstruck smiles. Almost

I could welcome it -
for having crossed and moored
and having paid, there would be

greeting on that farther bank. Now
I do not raise to wake them -
(had I, dreaming, thought them mine?) -

and facing down that cruel water
see the familiar reflex there.

Edward & Hope

Dunwich 1908

Light diminishes glimmering fields
whose tussocked grass smeared

earth mulch absorb the last
glister of custardy gorse that

tints the broken rail needling
each tip of rusting wire

while gunmetal sea brims
soupy beneath the briny

row of white
attentive cottages

and her grey eyes wild
